Dear Founders, Signers and Framers:
Gentlemen, I know you all have no idea who I am, after all I am writing to you from the future, but I will give you some information. I am Andrew DeMarco a first-generation American with a fascination for American History. This fascination has led me to do a lot of reading and studying and I am absolutely amazed at how relevant your insights, hopes and aspirations still are over 240 years later.
I had this idea that you should be kept apprised of how we are progressing and to see if we have heeded your advice. What better way to do this than in the form of communication which you are all most familiar with and that is a letter. During my studying and reading I found that you were all masters of the English language and many today would find your writings difficult to understand. I will attempt to interpret your meanings, so all can appreciate your wisdom. I know that I will be unable to match your eloquence, but I will do my best to live up to your standards. One thing I am certain of is that most of your insights are downright scary when looking at what is currently going on in our great country and the world today. It almost makes me wonder if you gentlemen were time travelers or aliens sent to build a new form of government.
So, from time to time you can expect a letter from me discussing your ideas and advice and comparing them to today’s political environment. These musings will also be posted in a blog. I know you must all be wondering what a blog is but trust me it will reach a lot more of my fellow citizens and others in a much faster way than you might have been used to. I will try to be non-partisan in my observations which I know at times may be difficult. I don’t profess to be a teacher, but I hope that these letters act as a history, civics and current events lesson and a means to educate, inform and elicit a civil discussion among those who read it. I also hope that it brings about a better understanding of all sides of an issue. I am counting on those who read it to start these discussions and maybe I can act as the moderator.
There is one thing of which I am certain and that is despite all our differences and disagreements, if we look at what you had all hoped for in the future, we will understand where we came from (our history) and have a better idea on where we are and where we should be going together in the future. There is no doubt in my mind that working together we can accomplish anything and achieve the goals you all had for our country.
Finally, I chose to start writing to you the “Founding Fathers,” “Signers of the Declaration of Independence,” and the “Framers of the Constitution” first, since you were the ones who got this crazy experiment called the United States rolling. I know you will provide me with lots of material and rest assured that going forward I will live up to the title of this blog, “Pen Pals from the Past” and use the thoughts, hopes and aspirations of many other great men and women in our history. Please enjoy these musings and I hope you all look forward to hearing from me as much as I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Andrew J. DeMarco
